Requirement: Unimodem V capable modem

You need to have a voice modem that supports Unimodem V attached to the computer on which ServersCheck runs. This functionality has been tested with the Lucent Winmodem. You need to make sure that the ServersCheck Voice Alerting service is running

You can verify if the modem is installed as a Unimodem V modem as follows. First go the Device Manager of your computer. When you see Unimodem V in the list of sound drivers, then you can use your modem for this this alerting functionality.

Unimodem/V is a set of universal voice modem drivers for Windows. These drivers are provided by Microsoft to facilitate playing audio, recording audio, and recognizing touch tones over a voice modem when using Windows Telephony API (TAPI).

TAPI is a set of standard interfaces that are used with telephony devices. Creating software using Windows TAPI allows, in theory, seamless compatibility with a wide variety of telephony devices (everything from voice modems to telephony cards).

Without Unimodem/V drivers installed, TAPI software cannot use the features of a voice modem. Unfortunately, Microsoft never released a set of Unimodem/V drivers that are compatible with Windows NT 4. As a result, there is absolutely no way to use this alert option under Windows NT4.

You will also need to have the Text to Speech technology installed from Microsoft.

Testing modem with the ServersCheck Voice Alerts tool (voicemodem_tester.exe)

In the add-ons subdirectory you will find a file called "voicemodem_tester.exe". Double click on it. When launching it you should not receive a warning dialog box. If you receive one saying that no voice modem was found, then ensure that the modem is a Unimodem V voice capable modem.

In the Calling Method tab, select Voice modem.

The voice call will now be made. A voice will prompt you to press the # (pound) key to hear the message. After pressing that key, it will play the alert message. A prompted after the message, press 1 to replay the message or 2 to end the call.
